There is a small community garden by the Lillie Road Recreation Ground that a group of local residents have started nurturing. Since 2023, volunteers from the local community have been working hard to beautify this previously neglected space in memory of Dr Jenny Vaughan OBE
Transforming two neglected garden borders - alongside Lillie Road from the entrance to Better Gym and by the basketball courts in the Rec - into attractive garden spaces has been no easy task. But a small group of volunteers has been working hard with spades, forks, litter pickers and enthusiasm to bring them to new life.
All sorts of discarded rubbish had to be removed first. The overgrown trees and shrubs needed rescuing and cleared of undergrowth to allow light and air into the potential new borders.
It's an ongoing battle to keep the spaces clean and productive, but we have made excellent progress and the new garden beds are being gradually planted up. And with positive support from LBHF, Better Gym, The Creighton Centre and local donors, the Friends of Lillie Road Rec (FoLRR) are on course to make Jenny's Corner a major new improvement to the park.
Follow our journey to make it a place for the public to use and enjoy.
None of this would have been possible without the help of our amazing volunteers! If you’re interested in joining us on this project, we’d love to hear from you.
We are working to create a sustainable, well-designed space within Lillie Rd Rec that will capture the imagination and raise up this neglected area for the community. Read more about our mission here.
We want to make Jenny’s Corner a space that welcomes the disabled community and those facing personal struggles, inspiring kindness across the generations who use the Recreation Ground and helping to change attitudes towards disability and mental health.
We also aspire to make this a place for outdoor activities for these communities with a focus on expanding and exploring biodiversity in urban areas.
